to the outside world

To the public, William Afton is a relatively normal man. He is charming, kind, and highly skilled at what he does. To parents, he comes across as helpful and eager to spread joy with his business. To the kids, he is compassionate and, in costume, even playful. While in costume, whether it be the original Golden Bonnie costume or the new, state-of-the-art Spring Bonnie suit, William easily gains the trust of children and adults alike. He spends much of his time in costume getting to know regular customers of all ages.Despite this, he is perfectly capable of being sarcastic, cold, and even downright cruel toward those he dislikes. These individuals get a rare glimpse behind the mask, something that is unsettling and hard to pin down.

to family

William's family knows him better than anyone else, seeing him behind closed doors when he no longer needs to put on quite so much of a show. However, William still wears a carefully fitted mask at most times.William is, most of the time, a decent enough father. His children want for little when it comes to material possessions. Although he is often busy with his work, he is relatively present in their lives. The darker shades of William's personality originally only show infrequently. He lacks compassion for mistakes or failures made by his children. He is not particularly comforting. He all but allows Michael to bully his youngest, only offering the occasional scolding if he's catches him in the act.His youngest's death changes him. For all his coldness, William cares about his children in his own way. Despite his own neglect, he blames Michael whole-heartedly for his other son's death and makes this more than known. And yet, he becomes ever more protective over both of his remaining kids, adamant to keep them far, far from his creations. And he fails.

on the inside

William is an obsessive, cruel man. This is a fact he hides well. His plan had never been to discover any of it: remnant, possessions, agony. No, his goals had started off as a combination of revenge and the sick enjoyment of causing misery. However, things never would have gone so far without his discovery. He might not have continued his killings, might have directed his cruelty in another direction when he became bored. But he had a new focus, something to experiment with. While William experiences no remorse for his intentional killings, he does carry some shred of guilt over Elizabeth's fate. And that is where William's complexity lies: he is capable of caring, of loving, only he chooses to limit it. He loved his children, but that love came with strings attached.Still, perhaps he could regain his family. He could rebuild it. He could put them back together.

after the incident

William Afton is a rotting corpse in a springlock suit, the very suit he had once used to lure his victims. It's a terrible kind of irony. But he didn't die. No, whether it be by agony or willpower, he is still there. Something has changed, however. After rotting in a backroom for decades, William emerges disoriented, desperate, and full of rage. It's not about revenge so much as it is about killing—and he will kill anything or anyone he can find. There is no need to hide it, to mask who he is beneath the formerly poised exterior. He finally looks like the monster that has always been inside.

• i do not believe that midnight motorist is about the afton family (rather that it, like all the PS secrets, is about the type of victims william targets).• regardless of the above, i want to clarify: putting aside that JR's is canonly a restaurant (not a bar), my william is not an alcoholic. if you imply as much in a thread, i will drop it without warning.• regardless of canon compliance, this portrayal of william assumes that the crying child died first, then elizabeth.

• to clear up the obvious regarding my portrayal: william is springtrap. william is the purple guy. william is the crying child's father. william is the protagonist of UCN.william is dead. glitchtrap, although i write him, is a program created by william to mimic him. william's evil ass is still rotting in his own personal hell as far as i'm concerned.• glitchtrap & the mimic are not the same & the books, as they always have been, are a separate continuity to the games. if you imply otherwise, i'll ignore it.• if any part of this page doesn't vibe with you, i'm 100% willing to discuss doing something different in our threads / a new verse. the only exceptions are for bullet points exclusively about william. i won't change his overall portrayal.• by default, please don't make broad assumptions about my portrayal of william. i do not follow a lot of fanon assumptions. if unsure, ask.• william is exclusively game-inspired. i take little to no inspiration from the books (and i'm largely unfamiliar with them outside of bits and pieces).

• springtrap is william afton's reanimated corpse inside of a suit and, to some extent, also a possession of the suit. he generally has more control over his own remains than the suit. remnant exposure will do that to you lmao• just because william loved his children to some extent does not mean he wasn't emotionally abusive or emotionally neglectful. however, my portrayal of william is NOT physically abusive. he is a terrible father, but i'm not comfortable crossing that line.• william is a serial killer. like, an actual, enjoys-killing-for-the-sake-of-killing serial killer. he has no deep-seated motive for why he starts killing, although discovering and researching possession/remnant/agony does change how and how often he kills. he has killed before CC's death (and before charlie).•he can and will kill adults, full stop. prior to discovering remnant, he'll do it for any reason. after that, he'll largely only target adults who are threats to him. don't get me wrong, he's coward enough to try to avoid fair fights, but he doesn't mind a struggle.• because the original game was never intended to be a series, i do not take the mention of "the suspect" being arrested as canon. i personally believe it was retconned and, even if it was not, my william was never arrested for the murders.

• yes, you did read an implication about gregory. i do ascribe to the gregory's-a-robot theory and, in my personal canon, william at minimum created the blueprint gregory was based off of. afterall, he wanted to put CC back together, right?

totally important characters notes

verses

↳ s p r i n g b o n n i e.

William's canon verse prior to the springlock incident. By default, usually set during his time working with Henry. Other than that, relatively vague unless clarified in a specific thread. Assume by default that he has already killed before.By default, this verse contains implications or outright discussion of William having romantic feeling toward Henry (reciprocated by default, but may vary when interacting with other portrayals of Henry). In the past I was not going to default ship, but this seems to be a widely accepted ship within the fandom. Willry may be mentioned or implied in threads with anyone. Please, please let me know if this is a problem and I will not bring it up in our threads. I also will never forceship or assume the feelings of another mun's portrayal of Henry.

↳ s p r i n g t r a p.

William's canon verse post-springlock incident. This includes FNAF6, as I see no point in differentiating. By default, will assume threads are set around FNAF3, but feel free to clarify otherwise.

↳ g l i t c h t r a p.

Canon verse for Help Wanted & beyond. The real William is dead, with all that's left behind being Glitchtrap, a program created by him & made to mimic him. The verse is request only & will not be assumed unless your muse is Vanny. This verse does not include Burntrap—I do not write him.

↳ b u i l d i n g  t h e  l i e.

Prior to canon. William has left England behind in favor of attending university in America. Cutting all but one of his family ties, he begins building up a new reputation—a shaky, but positive one. This verse can be set anytime from his first year of university to the opening of his first business.

↳ t h e  w o r s t  o f  m e.

Prior to canon. William is a secondary school student known for being volatile and a troublemaker. "Bully" may be putting it lightly. Despite an imperfect home life, nothing has made him this way. Outside of a few acquaintances, his only close friend is his sister Jayne. This verse can be set anytime from his first year in secondary school to just before he leaves for America.

↳ s c a r s  u n f a d i n g.

Canon AU. William survives that springlock incident and is left with permanent, obvious scars. Already volatile and on edge after the deaths of two of his children, he is a greater threat than ever once he recovers.
